Dr. Marissa Carter was born in England and obtained
an MA in biochemistry from Oxford University. Following
a brief research period at St. Bartholomews' Hospital
in London on the pineal gland, she moved to the United
States, where she spent 2 years as a fellow at MIT. In
1986 she graduated from Brandeis University with a PhD
in organometallic chemistry, publishing several groundbreaking
papers. From that time until late 1999, she held a variety
of positions in the chemical and plastics industries,
working in basic laboratory R&D, pilot plants, and
full-sized chemical plants. She has also worked in Sales,
Marketing, Technical Service, as well as Product Development,
thus gaining insight into best practices of teams, TQM,
and project management. Since the inception of SSI, she
returned to medical research, and has collaborated with
several groups in the areas of ophthalmology, oncology,
wound care, evidence-based medicine, obesity, and eating
disorders, the results of which have been recently published,
with many more papers in press. Dr Carter's strengths
lie in the many scientific disciplines in which she worked
that she brings to bear on medical problems.

Dr. Laura Vanderberg received her Ph.D. in microbial
physiology from North Carolina State University where
her research focused on bioremediation of chlorinated
hydrocarbons and high explosives. As an extension of her
Dept of Energy's Environmental Restoration & Waste Management
Fellowship, she undertook a postdoctoral research position
at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She was hired as a
technical staff member in 1995, where she worked on basic
and applied bioremediation research efforts. During her
tenure at Los Alamos, she became interested in biodefense
R&D and became leader of the bioanalytical & biosensors
team in the Chemistry Division. In 2000 she moved to Virginia
Beach VA where she was a science advisor, working closely
with the US Navy SEALs and EOD technicians to bring CBRN
defense tools, tactics & procedures to the Special Operations
Community. Most recently, she was detailed to Naval Special
Warfare Development Group from Johns Hopkins University
Applied Physics Laboratory. In 2007, Dr. Vanderberg relocated
to Wyoming to explore complementary interests. She currently
serves as a technical consultant to the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and owns a yoga studio.
Dr. Vanderberg's broad background ranges from laboratory
bench scale microbiological research to hands-on field
testing of chemical & biological detection devices to
coordination & facilitation of national & international
multidisciplinary workshops. She has a penchant for multidisciplinary
team building and a genuine interest in helping others.
She is a practical problem solver, technology translator
and teacher.
